screams for help could be heard through elmwood village. multiple 911 calls came in. there's a woman screaming please call 911. attacked by something. reporter: a little boy just 6-year-old was walking to school with his mother when a


recan jumped on him and scratched his face. danny walls was going to work had he he heard the screams. he jumped out of his car to help. i see his claw into the kid's face and biting the kid's face.


reporter: he grabbed his painting pole and started beating it. i killed the raccoon, the kid jumped up screaming. he was crying. reporter: walls' wife also heard the screams and called police.


all i saw was a man with a stick hitting, hitting and i was like, oh, my god! a man is hitting a woman and a kid. reporter: but as she got closer she realized it was her husband. then when i noticed he was


actually saving the kid from the raccoon, so i'm very proud of him. reporter: danny walls says once the chaos of the moment settled, the little boy's mother seemed grateful for his actions. we did speak to the mother


briefly and she says her son is recovering here at hackensack university medical center. as for the raccoon, it's in the hands of bergen county animal control and rabies results are expected on friday.
