How To Address A Recommendation Letter For Graduate School, into the working world. so we're looking for people towrite those letters for you who can comment on your impact inyour organization, whatever that's been.
so you're lookingto submit letters from people who have hadthe ability to directly supervise or oversee your work. and that could be aformal supervisor. or it could be someonewho was a project leader on a team you were on. it should never be from acolleague or a subordinate. it should definitely never befrom a family member or friend, as those will actuallybe detrimental
to your application. now, some students who havefewer years of work experience or are closer to thattime in undergrad might be asking, well, whatabout an academic letter, and could i submit that instead? what i would say is touse your best judgment. it is ok if you'revery freshly out of or still in yourundergrad experience to submit lettersof rec from faculty.
but there should be atleast one that's from a work experience of some sort. and if it was a facultymember overseeing you in a work environment, that's fine. but again, canthey comment on you in a broader context thanjust your performance in the classroom? and then, certainly, if you'restill in that undergrad, you could include some thatare more directly academic.
but think about team skills, interpersonal interactions, leadership, communication, your ability to understand the broadercontext of your impact in that organization. those types of commentsfrom a letter writer can really help to informthe application beyond all the other items that you submit.
