i decided that i would make my role as a pro-israel student to make sure that the narrative was a pro-israel narrative, and to educate other students on campus. just last night, the group met to write letters to lawmakers, asking senators and house members to oppose the boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement. this movement, abbreviated as bds, is receiving a lot of local and national attention.
yesterday, the students for justice in palestine held a protest on the quad in support of bds. while illinipac may not agree with the bds movement, they hope to create a dialogue with its supporters to reach some sort of common ground on the matter. illinipac co-president elan karoll thinks that negotiation is necessary for there to ever be a peaceful resolution to this ongoing conflict. we want two states for two peoples.
we want to talk about how we can achieve peace and have productive conversations around there. both karoll and blinder think that the bds movement would do more harm than good for the u.s. blinder says that she respects the opinions of students in support of bds, but she does not believe that israel has committed crimes worthy of divestment. the government in america is not perfect. the government in israel is definitely not perfect today.
however, it is a democracy and is a home for jewish people. as a jewish student who is deeply passionate about her religious culture, blinder hopes that lawmakers will pay attention to illinipac's pleas for action against the bds movement. in champaign, i am jacob fajerstein, ui-7 news.
