How To Add Mixed Fractions Quickly

in this video we are going to talk about how to subtract mixed numbers. and in particular we are going to talk about how to use our calculator to make that a lot easier. so, we have two mixed numbers, 8 and three fifths and 1 and one tenth, and we are going to subtract them. normally, to do that by hand, what we would do is,

How To Add Mixed Fractions Quickly, one of two things, either we would do a vertical subtraction writing 8 and three fifths above 1 and one tenth, then find a common denominators for three fifths and one tenth which would give us ten, writing equivalent fractions, three fifths is the same as six tenths so we would subtract

six tenths minus one tenth giving five tenths and we would subtract 8 minus 1 giving us 7. reducing we have 7 and one half. now this approach can lead to needing to borrow from time to time and that can get messy; so, another alternative to do this by hand would be to change our mixed numbers to improper fractions. for example, for 8 and three fifths, if we multiply 5 times 8 we get 40, and we add 3 to 40 we get forty three fifths. and for 1 and one tenth, 10 times 1 is 10, times 1 is 11; so, we get eleven tenths. then we would get a common denominator of ten, and writing equivalent fractions we have to multiply both the numerator and denominator by 2, giving us 86 tenths.

86 tenths minus 11 tenths is going to give us 75 tenths which is the same as 7 and five tenths (dividing 10 into 75).. and that is going to reduce to 7 and a half again but we can avoid all of this using our calculator, if we have a calculator with a fraction function. pretty much any texas instruments calculator will have this. this is the ti 30xiis. you can see the key right here. that has a capital a with a b over c. this indicates a mixed number. above it you can see where you can convert a mixed number to an improper fraction.

...to d over e. but let's go ahead and turn on the calculator and enter our first mixed number, all we have to do is type 8, hit the mixed number key, type the numerator of the fraction part, 3, hit the fraction key again, and then hit the 5, and that "8,3,5" means 8 and three fifths. now we're gonna hit subtract, and then we're gonna repeat the process, do 1, hit the fraction key, 1 again (for one tenth), hit the fraction key again, and enter the 10. and hit enter. and what we see here is 7 and a half on the screen. i hope this video is helpful. if it is, please remember to like it, and also feel free to post any questions in the comments section below.
