male reporter: haiti has been hit by a major earthquake. female reporter: the devastation is unimaginable here in port-au-prince. this is a horrible disaster that affected the vast majority of the population. you see you even have to kind of sometimes into little alleyways you know it’s… this is a makeshift camp that sort of sprouts up.
How To Adopt A Relative Child In Haiti, (speaking creole) you’re registered; everything went ok? any questions? my name is matt bolby. i am a returns project officer with the international organization for migration. this is a return project. it’s a project to relocate people
that don’t have a solid, secure place to live and to put them there. you have to deal with a lot of violence or threats. it’s one thing for me, i mean, at the end of the day, some day in the future, i’ll be leaving. but for the haitians that work with us, they live here and this is their home. when the international organisations come, they do a lot of work, but then they leave, and the rest of the work is left to local organisations. i am magdala michelle jean-pierre and i’m the lead coordinator of mofka. when i was young, i always enjoyed community activities. so, when i graduated, i started working in my own community.
in 1999, we set up an organisation for women. we take care of women who are victims of violence – women but also children. after january 12th [the earthquake] we started humanitarian activities. i like to work with the most vulnerable communities. i haven’t had the chance yet, but i would like to work with the most vulnerable people all over the world. it's my passion. i think the world needs more solidarity. i began my humanitarian work in a peaceful syria in 2005. from there you know i felt like i was really useful.
it’s a series of ups and downs. you have moments of tremendous energy and collaboration you know but then you have sort of different periods of relative stagnation and you lose sight of the fact that, you know, how much of a positive impact you’re making in these camps. you’re not going to change everything. you’re here to do one small thing that’s going to make a big difference.
