the local hero has special expertise in helping others. it makes you realize what's important in life. reporter: what's important to danielle is that her 72-year- old mother is going to be okay. she is a main member of the family.


she lives with us. my children have grown up with her. reporter: a grandmother of three, rose marie suddenly didn't have a pulse while dining at this restaurant in commack, long island. really it was her guardian


angel looking out for us. if she was home she could have easily passed away. reporter: that guardian angel, the restaurant manager antonio diaz. but the humble father of two says he is no hero. you are moved to tears right


now. well, i make my share of mistakes but when it cost to humanitarian reasons, i'm all in all the time. reporter: 30 years ago, dias was a medic in the army. he put his life saving skills to work yesterday.


rose marie was sitting here with seven friends a reunion lunch and they had been sharing photographers when one of the waiters noticed that rose marie was slumped over in her seat. dias started mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. i noticed that her tongue


actually was obstructing the airway. i managed to open up her airway and started getting some air into her and then i started compressions. reporter: continuing those compressions until reviving her and paramedics arrived.


thank god for him. at home with the newborn, she called dias to tell him that. i was in the right place at the right time. she is well deserving of a long lasting life. reporter: dias and they say


it's important for everyone to know cpr because you never know when you'll need to be the one to step in and save someone. in commack, long island, jessica borg, cbs 2 news. she is still recovering at the hospital. doctors are trying to figure
