you know exactly what you want? “i’d like to study in germany” – wonderful! the letter of motivation in your application is a very important document! now we’ll show you what belongs in that letter – and what doesn’t! of course you know why you want to study in germany.


How To Address A Letter To Germany, and you probably don’t want to waste time writing it all down. nonetheless – give yourself enough time. start working on your letter of motivation early. after all, as the german saying goes, “good things take time!” don’t begin your letter of motivation by repeating your cv.


you’ve already written that! your letter of motivation should answer other questions. what is your professional goal? where do you want to work after your studies? when you’ve finally found your dream job, how do you plan to apply your expertise in your home country – for example, socially, technically or politically? it’s a good idea to refer to information in books or your own personal or professional experience. write about why you are applying to this particular degree programme. which courses will be important for your professional advancement or future? here are some other relevant questions:why makes you the right applicant for this programme?


what knowledge and skills have you acquired in your previous education? do you already have work experience? have you ever worked in an organisation like an ngo or student organisation? how would you assess your personality? emphasise your strengths, but don’t exaggerate! now explain why you would like to study in germany. how is university study in germany different than that in your home country? to get an idea, talk with other students who have already studied in germany. is there something in germany which could serve as a model in your country? are there, for example, technical innovations which you would like to see applied in your home country?


are there any german institutions, organisations or companies which you would like to visit while you’re in germany? here are a few more tips:prepare well for your letter of motivation. do some research on the questions you’ll be answering in the letter. first draft an outline and then write the letter. but don’t include the outline and the questions in the letter of motivation. remember, you don’t have to answer all the questions, as your letter should not exceed 500 words or one and half pages in length. start with your letter head which includes your name, address and telephone number. structure your letter so that it begins with an introduction, followed by the main body and a closing. form paragraphs with blank lines.


use font size 11 and one of these fonts if possible: times new roman, arial, bookman, helvetica oder tahoma. avoid platitudes, clichã©s and flattery. your tone should be factual and thoughtful. and most importantly, pay attention to grammar and spelling! such “minor” mistakes can play a major role in the selection process! it’s a good idea to have a friend, colleague or your family check your letter for mistakes before you send it. if you keep all of these things in mind, your letter of motivation is sure to be a success. we wish you all the best for your application!
