How To Add Fractions Of The Same Denominator

we're asked to use these symbols less than equal to, or greater than, to compare the fractions and make a true statement. and for this exercise we'll be focusing on the meaning of the fractions, we will not be obtaining a common denominator. remember for a fraction, the denominator represents the number of parts in the whole,

How To Add Fractions Of The Same Denominator, and the numerator represents how many parts are being considered. so for the fraction one-fourth, we're considering one part, or it takes four parts to make the whole. and for one half we're considering one part where ittakes two parts to make the whole. and

therefore one-fourth is less than one-half. next we're comparing three-sixths to three-sixths. well these are the same fraction, so of course they're equal. next we're comparing three- sevenths and three-halves. three-sevenths means we have three copies of one-seventh, and three-halves means we have three copies of one-half. notice how for both fractions we havethe same number of copies, but because one-seventh is less than one-half, three-sevenths is less than three-halves. having three copies of one-seventh is less than having three copies of one- half. next we're comparing two-fifths and four-fifths. two-fifths means two copies of one-fifth,

and four-fifths means four copies of one-fifth. well having two copies of one- fifth is less than having four copies ofone-fifth and therefore two-fifths is less than four-fifths. next we're comparing five-sevenths and five-ninths. five-sevenths means five copies of one-seventh and five-ninths means five copies of one-ninth. so we have the same number of copies, but because one-seventh is greater than one-ninth, five-sevenths is greater than five-ninths. and then finally we're comparing four-eighths andone-half. the fraction four-eighths means we're referring to four parts, or it takes eight parts to make a whole. so we have half the parts it takes to make a whole, which means four-eighths is equal to one-half.

i hope you found this helpful.
