we are going to use these rectangular fractionbars to learn about adding fractions. we have two fraction bars that have already been created. in both cases the rectangles have been divided into eightequal parts.
How To Add Fractions Key Stage 2, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. on the left, this fraction bar has two shadedparts. two of the eight parts are shaded, we can callthat 2-eighths. here three of the eight
equal parts have been shaded. we can call that 3-eighths, so what arewe adding? we are adding 2-eighths plus 3-eighths. let us see what it is like to add them together. we can add these 2-eighths to these 3-eighths or we can add 3-eighths to the 2-eighths; you know additions commutitive, that means it goes in either direction. so let us look and see what the result is, whatthe sum is when we add these together. three, four,
5-eighths. 2-eighths equals 5-eighths; that makessense. so let us go ahead and see what it is like whenwe represent the answer. here we have the sum it is a fraction bar, but we have not divided it up yet, we divide it intotwo equal parts, three, four, five, six, seven, eight equal parts just like the other two. and we shade one, two three, four,
five of them. when i press the check work button look whathappens, it helps me to visualize and to see that 2-eighths plus 3-eighths equals two, three, four, 5-eighths. and we can go ahead and see how this is representedwith numbers. this states that 2-eighths, plus 3-eighths, equals 5-eighths.
